First Wednesday of the Month = EDS Awareness Day! 09/02/26
🍂September — Fall Isn’t a Reset Button
Cooler weather doesn’t magically erase chronic illness.
EDS doesn’t take seasons off.
But fall does invite reflection.
Slower mornings.
Warm food.
Deeper breaths.
And maybe a little more understanding of what our bodies are actually asking for.
🦓 EDS Is More Than “Being Flexible”
When most people hear Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, they picture someone bending their thumb backward or doing a cool party trick with their joints.
And yes, joint hypermobility can be part of EDS.
But that's only one piece of the puzzle.
EDS affects connective tissue—the tissue that helps hold, support, protect, and connect the structures throughout our bodies.
And connective tissue isn't just in our joints.
It's found in our skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, organs, and more.
That's why EDS can look so different from one person to another.
For one person, it may look like:
🦓 joints that bend farther than expected
🦓 frequent sprains, subluxations, or dislocations
🦓 chronic joint or muscle pain
🦓 soft or unusually stretchy skin
🦓 easy bruising or unusual scarring
For someone else, the story may include:
🦓 fatigue
🦑 digestive problems
🦓 headaches or migraines
🦓 dizziness or problems with the body's automatic functions
🦓 muscle weakness or difficulty maintaining stability
🦓 pain that doesn't always show up on an X-ray or MRI
And sometimes?
It looks like someone who appears completely healthy.
That's one of the hardest things about invisible illness.
You can look fine...
and still be fighting your body all day long.
🍂 So What Does Fall Have to Do With It?
Fall is full of messages about starting fresh.
New schedules.
New routines.
New goals.
But chronic illness doesn't care that September arrived.
A person with EDS doesn't suddenly get a brand-new body because the temperature dropped.
Sometimes the goal isn't:
“How much can I accomplish?”
Sometimes it's:
“How can I support my body enough to make it through today?”
That's not giving up.
That's learning your body's language.
🍞 A Little Sourdough Wisdom
A sourdough starter doesn't become stronger because we demand more from it.
It needs the right conditions.
It needs nourishment.
It needs rest.
It needs time.
And sometimes it needs us to stop messing with it and just let it do its thing.
Our bodies aren't so different.
Sometimes strength looks like movement.
Sometimes strength looks like rest.
Sometimes strength looks like asking for help.
And sometimes strength looks like admitting:
“Today, my body needs something different.”
That isn't weakness.
That's awareness.
🦓 This September, Let's Remember:
EDS isn't simply “being double-jointed.”
It isn't laziness.
It isn't exaggerating.
It isn't something someone can simply push through.
And it certainly doesn't disappear because the weather gets cooler.
EDS is a complex connective-tissue disorder that can affect people in very different ways.
So if someone you know needs more breaks, uses mobility aids, changes their plans, moves differently, or simply can't do today what they did yesterday...
believe them.
You don't have to understand someone's illness to believe their experience.
This month, we're choosing nourishment over punishment.
Grace over guilt.
Support over comparison.
And a little more patience with the bodies that carry us through every season.
Because fall isn't a reset button.
It's just another season to learn how to care for the body we have.
From The Zebra Sourdough Co., we're continuing to spread awareness—one conversation, one loaf, and one zebra at a time. 🦓🍞
Happy First Wednesday. 🍂
